Every Once In a While...

Every once in a while, a job comes along, pays well, but the art director ends up not moving forward with making your design into a product. This was one of those jobs, which never wound up going through, but I was extremely proud of.

The client had the licensing rights for the Beatles, and let me pick a song to create a type based design on. I was really happy with the results, and saddened when they didn't move forward with it. I can't sell it or print it unless I get licensing, but at least this design can be posted on line:

New Design: Spray Cop Volume Two Needs Your Votes!

Inspired by the happenings at UC Davis with the infamous pepper spray cop over stepping people's freedom to protest, as well as feeling a want to express solidarity with the OCCUPY movement, I finally managed to create a design which I think expresses my feelings pretty clearly, yet manages to fit within the framework of my theme for one line of work in graduate school "expectation." The crowd reflected are wearing Guy Fawkes masks. I was also thinking of calling it "spray us again..." but that seemed silly in afterthought.

Two Speaking Events!

I'll be appearing twice this month as a guest lecturer.

The first, I'll be appearing at CSULB, at the top of the FA4 building at 6pm this Friday, the 13th of October, to discuss Illustration along with my wife, Mai Kemble who will also talk about illustrating for kids books. It should be fun, and is a free event. If you're in long beach, check it out! We were forced to push back the date from last Friday due to a flat tire on our car, but we'll be sure to rock it this time!

Next, on October 29th, I'll be part of a panel about finances and illustration practices, called Baby Step #3, for the Society of Illustrators. It'll be held at the Sherman Oaks Galleria 5301 Ventura Blvd. #360 CA 91403-6613 (across from the cheesecake factory). It's Free for members, $5.00 for students, and $10.00 for non-members! Guest Lecture At CSULB and Gallery Show

Gestalten Book Featuring My Designs!

Last year I was approached to submit 10 of my designs for a book titled "TORSO: T-shirt Graphics Exposed," which was extremely flattering, considering that Gestalten publishes some of the finest books on graphic design in the market.

The book features many of the best t-shirt designer's around and their graphic designs for the medium, and I feel fortunate to have many of my designs featured in the book.

Garcon Chic "Ri-evolution" Project

Elvio Esposito contacted me to be one of 6 hand picked designers to design a comic book/ t-shirt that would promote their "Ri-evolution" AIDS awareness campaign in collaboration with Italian League for the Fight Against AIDS (LILA). This was a complicated commission, and it took me a while to figure out how to properly represent the juxtaposition of the garcon chic brand, which is supposed to be sophisticated, depicts a love of life, and the beauty of night, with the harsh and saddening topic of aids and aids awareness. So after long deliberation, here's what I wrote and came up with:

My contribution was to write and draw a comic that would capture the elegance and love of life that the Garcon Chic brand aims to represent, while also discussing the problem of aids, and horrors in the world.

The best part about this project was that on the onset, Garcon Chic stated I had total creative freedom with the job, and to my pleasant surprise, there were no revisions needed, and indeed, I got to create exactly what I'd initially envisioned:

The “"Ri-evolution" Tour is a summer campaign of theme-events that will be held in some of the most renowned Italian and European disco clubs with the aim of making people more aware on the use of condoms, by free mass distribution of brand personalized condoms.

New Shirts, New Vox Comic, and new move!!!

Ladies and Gents, I'm now back living in California, and am currently staying at my families house in the Antelope Valley while Mai and I search for apartments in the Orange County area. The move was hectic, but fun, but some cool stuff happened on the move:

1. My "puppet check up" design was on sale for 24 hours on teefury, and did REALLY well, selling over 1,000 copies in the short time it was available, getting the coveted cute "hotcakes" icon that teefury places on top sellers. Thanks to everyone who bought a copy, as it'll be helping me pay for the downpayment wherever Mai and I decide to settle down again! check out the reaction on the blog from when the shirt was up for sale.
